Peggy and I are coming up on our 12th year living in Brookshire. We have found we have saved way too much stuff and are beginning to sift thru it for disposal. Among those things were some old Brookshire resident directories. Following are some things we learned from these directories about our community.
The first families settling in Brookshire, which had originally been a family farm owned by the Hershey family, took place in 2004. By the end of that year, 13 families had bought lots and built homes in the new 55+ community. At that time, the main roads had only base paving, and several were not paved at all. There was no Community Center. Most of these pioneer residents settled in and around Brookshire Ave. and Heather Ridge.
Five years later in 2009, 186 families made up a growing community, as homes started to line all our streets. More lots were waiting for sale, and we had a new community center build by Brookshire LLC in 2006.
Today in 2017, of those 186 families from 2009, more than 50 have moved on and their homes are occupied by new families. We now have 232 properties occupied by our residents and the turnover of properties continues.
